Arsenal have one of the strongest midfields in European football.
When writing his regular column for Sky Sports, Gunners legend Charlie Nicholas shared the one player who Arsenal should sell in the summer.
Despite receiving heavy criticism again this season, Arsene Wenger has guided his side to fourth in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
And it seems as though the Frenchman has finally built a squad with sufficient squad depth.
The Gunners arguably posses the strongest midfield in the Premier League, with Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin all competing for the two spots in the middle of the park.
They could even afford to allow Jack Wilshere to join Bournemouth on a season-long loan.
But Nicholas, who made 151 league appearances for Arsenal during a five year spell with the club, explained why Wenger should dispose of one of those midfield options in the summer, when writing his column for Sky Sports:
Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is substituted after sustaining an injury
“I don’t have a problem with him getting a new deal [Coquelin]. I’m not his greatest fan, but they don’t have many options in that position. Santi Cazorla is out for a long period, Mohamed Elneny is away and Jack Wilshere is on loan, so Arsene Wenger certainly can’t afford to let him go right now. However, I would sell him in the summer when everybody is fit.”
Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin
Whilst Coquelin most certainly cannot be considered anywhere near the level of the other Arsenal midfielders, from a technical perspective, he does do a fantastic job for the team, and always seems to go under the radar.
But whether Arsene Wenger agrees with Charlie Nicholas’ view remains to be seen.
