Celtic kicked off their Champions League group-stage campaign with an emphatic defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Hoops went into their Champions League group-stage opener probably with fairly low expectations with PSG – who, of course, captured the imagination with the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe during the summer – and Bayern Munich also in the group.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ men will probably be hugely disappointed with their opening result as they were beaten 5-0 at home by the Ligue 1 giants to evoke memories of their Champions League bow from last season when they were beaten 7-0 by Barcelona.
And after watching the game, Nicholas suggested that the Bhoys can forget about causing a major upset and challenging for the knockout stages of the competition this season.
“Celtic have learnt nothing from last season,” he told Gilette Soccer Special on Sky Sports.
“It’s embarrassing to lose 5-0 at home. Yes, you can talk all the millions you want, but 5-0 at home is quite an embarrassment. Already, after one match, Celtic are playing for third and they’ve got Anderlecht in two weeks time away.”
After a hugely disappointing first-half, there was a period in the second-half when Celtic looked much brighter and actually looked much more likely to score the fourth goal, which, while it would have come too late to salvage anything from the game, would have restored a little bit of the confidence lost following the first 45 minutes.
However, PSG were the ones to score the next two goals to put the exclamation mark on the victory that has certainly brought Celtic back down to earth.
