Charlie Nicholas defends Brendan Rodgers decision to leave Celtic for Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers left Celtic for Premier League side Leicester City on Tuesday.

Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Brendan Rodgers did not turn his back on Celtic following his decision to leave for Premier League side Leicester City on Tuesday.

The Foxes confirmed on their official Twitter account that the former Liverpool boss has replaced the recently-sacked Claude Puel at the King Power Stadium.

Rodgers was on the verge of winning the treble-treble with Celtic and his decision to leave before it potentially happens hasn’t sat well with many of the club’s supporters.

Speaking to Soccer Special on Sky Sports News (26/02/2019 at 7:35 pm), Nicholas’ claim about Rodgers may infuriate fans further as he pointed that ‘a lot of fans’ are already angry.

“He could have [finished the job],” Nicholas told Sky Sports News. “But I always felt that as soon as some decent offer came in for him, he would probably take it because it suited him. He didn’t disguise that.

“So, I don’t see him turning his back on Celtic. I know a lot of the fans tonight will be angry and saying ‘how dare he do this at a certain time because we are threatening eight in a row and treble-treble’. But that’s the reality of football.”

During his time in Glasgow, Rodgers won all seven domestic trophies that were up for grab as his former team are on the verge of winning another Premiership title and are still in the Scottish Cup.

If the Bhoys do manage to win the two remaining trophies of the season then Celtic will win a remarkable treble-treble and Rodgers would have played a massive part in that despite now managing another club.

During his career, the Northern Irishman has worked at Chelsea, managed the likes of Liverpool and Swansea in England’s top tier and will now be hoping to work his magic with Leicester.

The Midlands outfit won the Premier League title in remarkable fashion in 2016 and while repeating that feat is highly unlikely, potentially reaching and competing in Europe isn’t.
