Charlie Nicholas comments on Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey has struggled for playing time at Newcastle United this season.

Former Celtic and Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (1:46pm, April 27, 2019) that Newcastle United may as well sell Jonjo Shelvey in the summer transfer window.

Shelvey has struggled for playing time for Newcastle in recent times and has lost his place in Rafael Benitez’s starting lineup.

The 27-year-old former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder started the campaign as an important player for the Magpies, but Newcastle have done well without him in recent weeks and have secured their Premier League status for the 2019-20 campaign.

The England international midfielder has made nine starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle this season, providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.

During the 2017-18 campaign, Shelvey made 25 starts and five substitute appearances in the league for the Magpies, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

Nicholas suggested that Newcastle may as well sell Shelvey this summer amid uncertainty at the club regarding the future of manager Benitez, who is out of contract at the Magpies at the end of the season.

Nicholas said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (1:46pm, April 27, 2019): “You are never convinced what’s going to happen with any of these players at the moment.

“A year ago you would have said they would be mad to sell Jonjo Shelvey, but now you would say they may as well take the money for him as he never gets a game.”
