Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that he believes the club should appoint Ronald Koeman as Arsene Wenger’s successor.

Wenger is into the last year of his contract at the Emirates and all indications have been that it will be the final year of his long reign.

Talk is naturally rife about who could potentially replace him, with recent rumours suggesting that Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is on the club’s shortlist.

He would be a surprise appointment with Gunners fans keener to see a big name manager arrive at the club.

Koeman would certainly fill that bracket given his history in the game and Nicholas believes he should be top of the shortlist.

“There’s a shrewdness about Koeman – he doesn’t complicate himself. I just love his whole approach,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’ve said it before – if I was Arsenal and [Arsene] Wenger is ready to go, he would be the number one target for me.”

The problem for Arsenal should they want Koeman is that they would face a fierce fight to get him away from current club Everton.

The Dutchman took charge at Goodison Park this summer and has led them to their best start since 1978, with the Blues currently sitting second in the table with 13 points from five games.

That has made him a huge favourite on Merseyside already and they would be loathed to let him leave for London, to say the least.
