Charlie Mulgrew got on the scoresheet as Blackburn Rovers kicked off life in League One with a 2-1 defeat at Southend.
With Blackburn Rovers being relegated from the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday fans would be forgiven for being unsure about how good a signing Charlie Mulgrew would be for the Owls after Sky Sports linked him with a Hillsborough switch last month.
Sky Sports suggested that the bid included a fee that could ultimately rise to £200,000 which is arguably a bargain in today’s market considering that Mulgrew is an international, and was arguably one of the few Rovers players to emerge from last season with any credit.

That offer was rejected, but perhaps it may not be out of the question to suggest that it may not take an eye-watering amount to get a deal across the line – and based on his most notable contribution in Blackburn’s season-opener against Southend on Saturday, it would hardly be a surprise if Carlos Carvalhal was seriously considering making an improved bid.
Southend were 2-0 up when Rovers were awarded a free-kick eight minutes in the second-half, and it was the former Celtic man who stepped up, curling a brilliant effort round the wall into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with absolutely no chance.
The fact that Rovers conceded two goals may leave Wednesday supporters hesitant about the idea of stepping up their pursuit of Mulgrew, but the goal certainly showed a huge amount of class and quality.
It was the kind of quality that should arguably be playing at a higher level than League One, so perhaps Wednesday should consider returning with a fresh bid and offering him the chance to make the return to the Championship.
