Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson was not great for Scotland against Russia.
Andrew Robertson is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, but the Liverpool defender has come in for some harsh criticism for his recent performance for Scotland.
Robertson was in action for Scotland against Russia in the European Championship Qualifying Group I at Hampden Park in Glasgow last Friday evening.
The 25-year-old left-back had a disappointing game, as he was under pressure at the back, was at fault Russia’s equaliser, and failed to be at his attacking best.
Former Scotland international striker Kris Boyd and BBC pundit Tam McManus have criticised Robertson (click here and here to read more), so have a number of Scotland fans, as reported on HITC Sport.
Charlie Mulgrew, who plays with Robertson for Scotland and is on loan at Wigan Athletic from Blackburn Rovers at the moment, has defended Robertson.
Mulgrew told The Scottish Sun about Robertson: “There is a lot of pressure on Robbo because he’s a Champions League winner. He is captain of the country as well, but he handles pressure week in, week out for Liverpool.
“It was similar to when we had Darren Fletcher in the team when he was at Manchester United. People expected him to perform miracles and it is the same with Robbo.
“It is up to us to reach the level to help Robbo. It isn’t his responsibility to do it himself. If we all do our jobs then he can shine. Robbo is a top player and we are glad to have him.”
Stepping up
There is no doubt that Robertson is a quality footballer, but the left-back does need to step up for Scotland.
The former Hull City star’s performances for his national team have not been at the level for Liverpool, and the 25-year-old does need to do more.
