Southampton winger missed crucial spot kick and England lost to Germany again.

Nathan Redmond was the fall guy as England’s under-21 side suffered a familiar fate in their bid to win the European Championships.

Aidy Boothroyd’s team lost on penalties in the semi-finals to rivals Germany, after drawing 2-2 after extra time.

While Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham missed an early penalty, it as Southampton’s Nathan Redmond who had his decisive spot kick saved to give Germany the victory.

Redmond did not look confident before taking his penalty and after his shot was saved he slumped to the pitch with Germany’s players celebrating wildly around him.

Southampton teammate Charlie Austin was quick to offer him support via social media, urging the winger to try and quickly put it behind him and re-focus on his club after a break.

There is plenty for Redmond to look forward to at Southampton this coming season, with the club so far managing to keep hold of all their top players, a rarity in recent years.

They also have a new manager at the helm, and Mauricio Pellegrino will likely want to have Redmond as a key part of is team.

It is hard to ignore however that this was an opportunity missed by this young England team to start re-writing a new chapter of history, and show they can beat the Germans on penalties in a major tournament.

That will have to wait until next time, but the failure to do so is not a burden Redmond should carry, and the support he will get will likely ensure he bounces back as an even more determined individual.
