Speaking on the TalkSPORT GameDay Podcast, Charlie Austin has made a claim about Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

The QPR forward was speaking about his admiration for Alan Shearer when he was growing up, and he claims that Kane is the only striker who looks capable of breaking the Newcastle legend’s Premier League goalscoring record.

Indeed, Shearer’s 260 goal record has stood for a long time now, and nobody has come close to breaking his landmark tally.

However, Austin believes that Kane is in with a shout.

What’s Austin said about Kane?

Austin says that Kane is the only person who looks capable of breaking Shearer’s record.

“Shearer was the ultimate number nine, he was and he still is. 260 Premier League goals, Harry Kane is the only person that looks capable of breaking that record, but he was the ultimate number nine, ask anyone in English football who is the ultimate number nine and they’ll say Alan Shearer,” Austin said.

Will be close

This time last year, you may have said that Kane breaking Shearer’s record was a foregone conclusion.

However, after a poor start to this season and a patchy run of form, it looks like this could be a closely run contest.

Kane is 89 goals behind Shearer, so he needs to average 15 goals a season for the next six years – that’s if he decides to stay in England in any case.

It’s certainly doable, but Kane may not blow Shearer’s record away.
