Rangers will host Scottish Premiership champions Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.
Charlie Adam has warned Celtic that Rangers will ‘rebuild’ and be ‘stronger’ next season and they will want to lay down a marker for their Old Firm clash this Sunday.
The Bhoys recorded their eighth Scottish Premiership title in a row last Saturday when they ran out comfortable winners against Aberdeen.
Steven Gerrard’s side have had to settle for the runners-up spot this season, with inconsistent performances since the turn of the year playing a part in them failing to challenge Celtic for the title during the second half of the campaign.
Former Premier League midfielder Adam pointed towards the issues in Rangers’ game this season but was adamant that they will challenge Celtic next term.
“Knowing the manager, he will be happy with some aspects of the progress but he will be disappointed by others,” Adam told Herald Scotland. “He’s a winner and he wants to win trophies so while second is a decent achievement, he wants better than that.
“It’s the consistency aspect that let Rangers down in the second half of the season – certainly in terms of results. So that’s why he will want to finish the season strongly, including this Old Firm game.
“Rangers will rebuild and get stronger so it’s going to be a big summer and hopefully they will be real challengers.”
The last time Gerrard’s side came up against Celtic at Ibrox, they ran out 1-0 winners and they will be looking to add to that win on Sunday.
During their last encounter, which took place at Parkhead, Neil Lennon’s side were the winners in what was a hotly-contested encounter from both teams.
Since that defeat, the Gers have won five games on the bounce, with striker Jermain Defoe and midfielder Scott Arfield standing out with their performances.
