Charlie Adam told PLZ Soccer that when Rangers were out of the Premiership it was ‘easy’ for Celtic to win the title and push towards nine-in-a-row.
The former Scotland midfielder, who has tipped former Everton boss Roberto Martinez to be the next Celtic boss, claimed when Rangers returned and ‘the pressure came on’ their rivals they ‘failed’.
Neil Lennon left Celtic on Wednesday after a pretty abject, mistake-ridden and disastrous campaign, both on and off the field, which now sees Rangers just weeks away from officially stopping the ten.
But Adam brutally claimed that it was a given that Celtic were going to win the title without their Old Firm neighbours, as he shared his thoughts on Martinez potentially coming up against Steven Gerrard.
“If we go back to what Celtic had to beat in that period when Rangers were gone,” said Adam. “Aberdeen or Motherwell, who were probably 150th and 180th odd in Europe, coefficient rating.
“So, if Celtic couldn’t have beaten them two to win the Championship then there was something wrong. So, that was easy. That’s why Ronny Deila ended up winning two titles.
“Then they upped it with Brendan and brought in a bit of quality. But Brendan’s signings weren’t as good as they should be. There was a lot of problems with Brendan. But because Rangers was trying to re-build and when the pressure come on, it failed.
“I don’t believe John Kennedy will be the manager. He will get an opportunity from now until the end of the season if he wins every game. He might get the job.
“But Celtic need to look deeper than that. Somebody like a Roberto Martinez might step in, who has Shaun Maloney as assistant manager and he knows the football club. Somebody like that might be the answer.”

The Martinez-Shaun Maloney partnership at Paradise would be the dream scenario for Celtic supporters.
But it’s going to take something to get Martinez out of his Belgium job, and that with the delayed Euros looming.
Whatever happens, the correct call needs to be made when appointing the next Celtic manager, because if that is messed up then it will only have a knock-on effect.
