Charlie Adam says two managers were better suited to Aston Villa than Dean Smith

Smith has been appointed as Aston Villa’s new manager.

Charlie Adam told BBC Radio 5 Live just before Aston Villa announced the appointment of Dean Smith as the club’s new manager, that two out-of-work bosses would have been better suited to the Villa role.

Smith, 47, joins Villa after leading Brentford to three top-10 finishes in his three years at Griffin Park, despite working under a small budget with The Bees. He replaces Steve Bruce, who was sacked earlier this month.

John Terry returns to the club after leaving in the summer, rejoining Villa as Smith’s assistant while Jesus Garcia Pitarch joins as sporting director. He has worked in the same role at Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Real Zaragoza.

Villa announced the appointment of Smith late on Wednesday night and prior to the decision, Stoke City midfielder Adam said out-of-work duo David Moyes and Sam Allardyce would have been better suited to Smith.

“For me, if I’m on the outside, I’m going for the quick fix now,” Adam said, moments before Villa announced Smith. “The quick fix is your usual suspects. Yes, Smith is going to have a chance because he gets his sides playing good football.

“But Sam [Allardyce], David Moyes; they’re going to get linked. They are probably Villa’s best options if they want that quick fix now and to get back into the Premier League.”

Allardyce was last in charge at Everton, where he was criticised by fans for his perceived negative style of football while Moyes took West Ham from the relegation zone to a much more comfortable 13th place.

Both remain on the lookout for new clubs, though, after being replaced by Marco Silva and Manuel Pellegrini. But all eyes will be on Smith instead, who takes charge of his first game in nine days against Swansea City.
