Charlie Adam has told Open Goal that Barry Ferguson was “always quite hard” on him during their days at Rangers.

The two midfielders were at Ibrox at the same time, with Adam spending six years at the Glasgow giants, while Ferguson – a Rangers academy product – had two spells in the senior side which spanned a total of 11 years.

Adam, 31, claims that the 39-year-old used to subject him to tough love while at the Gers, but the Stoke City man believes that his fellow Scot was simply trying to help him improve.

“Fergie was at me every day and he probably wanted the best out of me but I always feel he was quite hard on me,” he told Open Goal.

“But I respected him as a player because I thought he was a wonderful player for Rangers

“Of course it did [make me a better player]. I try and do that myself with younger players but you always fear that you’re probably moaning at them.”

Adam is out of contract with Stoke at the end of this month and there has been talk about him re-signing for Rangers, with Sky Bet installing the Gers as second favourites to sign him.

He is 5/1 with the popular bookmaker, but it remains to be seen if manager Pedro Caixinha – who has signed four players this summer – would want him back.
