The former Stoke City man has signed a two-year deal with Aston Villa.
Stoke City’s Charlie Adam has taken to Twitter after his midfield partner Glenn Whelan completed his move to Aston Villa.
Whelan signed a two-year deal at Villa Park on Tuesday after a reported fee of £1.5 million was agreed between the two clubs, ending his nine-and-a-half-year association with the Premier League side.
The 33-year-old’s transfer has not been universally well received by those of an Aston Villa persuasion, with many Villans supporters venting their displeasure about the move on the social media website.
But according to Adam at least, they need not be discouraged.
“Good luck glen whelan on his move @AVFCOfficial 9 amazing years with us and will be missed on and off the pitch,” the Scot posted.
Whelan becomes Aston Villa’s fourth summer recruit, following John Terry, Sam Johnstone and Ahmed Elmohamady to the Midlands.
Before moving to Stoke in early 2008, the 81-cap Irishman played for both Sheffield Wednesday and Bury and was on the books of Manchester City to begin with.
A report in The Irish Sun earlier this month claimed that Wednesday, along with Burnley and Derby County, were also interested in signing Whelan during the summer transfer window.
