Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam has hinted to the Daily Record that he wants a return to Rangers during the January transfer window.

Adam, 32, joined the Rangers ranks from hometown club Dundee as a teenager back in 2003, and made 88 appearances before being sold to Blackpool in 2008.

The midfielder starred with the Seasiders, guiding them to the Premier League and then impressing in the top flight, enough to sign for Liverpool in the summer of 2011.

Adam only spent one year at Anfield alongside now-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard before heading to Stoke, where he remains now – but is struggling for first-team football.

Adam may well look to move on in January and play first-team football away from Gary Rowett’s side, and one team looking for a midfielder is – ironically – Rangers.

Gerrard may well be in the market for a playmaker in January, and despite Adam’s age, he may just become a Gers target when the transfer window re-opens.

Now, Adam has suggested that he wants a return to Scottish football having played in Kris Boyd’s testimonial, and specifically mentioned Rangers in his comments, hinting that he is eyeing up a reunion with Gerrard at Ibrox in January.

“A loan is something I would look at,” said Adam. “I will discuss it when it’s closer to the time but I want to play – and Scotland is, hopefully, an option. It was great to come back and relive the old stories with the guys I played with at Rangers, like Boydy, Sasa Papac and Pedro Mendes. It’s also been good to see how Rangers are progressing this season under Steven Gerrard.”

“He has the aura, presence and stature to take on the pressure that comes with that job. A lot of people might have crumbled by now. You saw it with Pedro Caixinha. He struggled. The pressure got to him. A lot of other managers have had it and struggled with the pressure but Steven will relish the challenge because he has always done that as a player. He will expect people to be doubting him and will want to prove them wrong,” he added.
