Could former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam finish his career at Ibrox?

Charlie Adam has told The Times that he would like to remain a Premier League player for a while longer, but would not rule out the idea of returning to Rangers towards the end of his career – as long as he was good enough to contribute to the Gers.

Adam is facing a somewhat uncertain summer with Stoke City currently situated in a very precarious situation in the Premier League, and with the midfielder heading towards the final year of his contract at the bet365 Stadium.

Paul Lambert’s men are one point off safety, and relegation would throw several players’ future up in the air – and Adam appears set to be one of those squad members. And when asked about his future and whether a return to Ibrox may be on the cards, Adam suggested that staying in England’s top flight is his priority, but hinted that returning to Rangers would be something that he would be interested in.

“I’m ruling nothing out about my future. I’d go anywhere where I thought there was an opportunity. Ideally, I’ll be an English Premier League player for another couple of seasons, but you never know,” he told The Times.

“Regarding Rangers, it might come up or it might never happen. I’m open to anything in my career. It would have to be a case of Rangers or anyone else judging whether I was better than what they currently had in their team.”

While Rangers are certainly well stocked for options in the middle of the park, it would arguably be a very good piece of business if they managed to get Adam back nearly a decade after his departure from the club.

The 32-year-old has plenty of quality and would provide bags of experience, and that would arguably provide a big boost to the likes of Ross McCrorie and Greg Docherty, who have both been key parts of the Gers’ midfield this season.

And if the terms can be right – it may not be a popular move if Rangers tried to offer Adam anything like the wages he would expect as a Premier League player – there seems little downside to having discussions about trying to bring him back if the midfielder became available in the coming years.
