Charles Barkley has once again expressed his doubts about Victor Wembanyama’s long-term physical durability and career trajectory.
Even if the point sounds “stupid,” Barkley didn’t shy away from making this statement during a recent appearance on the Dan Le Batard Show.
The San Antonio Spurs star’s unusual combination of size and skill has sparked debate across NBA circles about how long players of his height can sustain elite performance.

Charles Barkley on Victor Wembanyama’s health question
Barkley didn’t shy away from the topic when discussing the Spurs phenom’s future, focusing on the unique challenges that come with exceptional height.
“The only question about Victor is his health,” Barkley said on the Dan Le Batard Show. “You know, Dan, I hate saying this because it sounds stupid, but it’s true.”
He added: “These guys who are that tall, have we ever seen any one of them stay really healthy for like 10 years of excellence? I mean, it’s such a freak of nature to be that tall. And I love that kid. I hope he’s able to stay healthy.”
Barkley’s perspective reflects a long-running discussion about how physical factors like height and unusual body type affect NBA longevity.
Players with rare size, while capable of dominance, have historically faced greater wear and tear, physical breakdowns and shorter primes compared to more traditionally built athletes. Spurs big man Wembanyama stands out as one of the most uniquely gifted players in recent league history.
Charles Barkley compares Victor Wembanyama to other towering greats
Barkley expanded on his point by highlighting how rare it is for very large players to sustain elite performance over a long period, using one of the NBA’s most iconic big men as a reference.
“I’ve said this before, Shaquille O’Neal is the biggest human being I’ve ever seen in my life. Him being able to play for 20 years is one of the greatest accomplishments in sports history,” he continued.
“I know at the end he didn’t have a lot left, but he had a 10 to 15-year run where he could outrun everybody. He could outjump everybody. But yeah, but man, I hope Victor can stay healthy,” Chuck concluded
Barkley’s remarks underline both admiration for Wembanyama’s talent and concern about the physical toll of the NBA’s grind on rare body types.
The conversation around Wembanyama’s durability comes amid a broader league discourse on how players with unusual physical gifts, giants, freak athletes and hybrid big, manage long careers compared to more conventional builds.
