Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Georginio Wijnaldum’s agent has shared just how close his client came to joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2016.
After Newcastle were relegated, there was something of a scramble for Wijnaldum’s signature amongst the top clubs, and one side who wanted him was Spurs.
Wijnaldum was seemingly very open to the idea of joining Tottenham, with his agent claiming that he even went to Mauricio Pochettino’s house at the time.
What’s been said?
Wijnadlum’s agent told the story of how the midfielder almost joined Spurs.
“Six years ago Georginio was at the house of Mr Pochettino, actually it was five years ago. When Gini left Newcastle Mr Pochettino was the manager of Tottenham at the time and at the time he showed an interest in Gini and they had a talk and Gini had a good feeling about it, but in the end his choice was Liverpool,” Humphry Nijman said.

What could have been
Where would Spurs be now if they signed Wijnaldum back in 2016?
Well, they would have had an absolutely incredible midfield pairing with Wijnaldum and Mousa Dembele, and given that they weren’t far off being European and Premier League champions under Pochettino, who’s to say that Wijnaldum wouldn’t have been a difference maker.
Sadly, Liverpool beat Tottenham to this deal and Wijnaldum went on to win the Premier League and the Champions League with the Reds.
