Premier League and Champions League winner Michael Carrick is one of the early candidates to take over from the sacked Steve Bruce at Championship strugglers West Brom, according to the Northern Echo.

A quick glance through the recent history of West Bromwich Albion’s managerial appointments hardly paints the picture of a club with a plan in mind.

From the experienced Alan Pardew to the complete opposite end of the spectrum in Darren Moore. From the front-foot, possession football of Slaven Bilic to Sam Allardyce’s banks-against-the-wall reactionism. Bright young thing Valerien Ismael to EFL old-timer Steve Bruce.

Now, in another whiplash-risking U-turn, the Northern Echo believe that The Baggies could go from Bruce (61 years old, 11 different clubs on his CV) to a man 20 years his junior. A man who has never before taken charge of a club at senior level.

Both West Brom and Middlesbrough like Michael Carrick

Manchester United legend Carrick is reportedly high on West Brom’s radar. The former England international wants to follow the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard into management. He was seemingly bitten by the managerial bug during his brief spell in caretaker charge of the Red Devils, following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

The complication, as far as West Brom are concerned, is that Carrick has admirers elsewhere in the second tier. He is the ‘leading candidate’ for the Middlesbrough job. Fellow underachievers Boro have held preliminary discussions with Carrick’s camp, the Echo add.

The Mirror say that West Brom are also considering three coaches with a proven track record in the second-tier. Former Huddersfield Town boss Carlos Corberan is one. He lead an unfancied Terriers side into the play-off final against all expectations last term.

Ex-Burnley manager Sean Dyche is another on the radar. As is Gary Rowett; the man at the helm of a a Millwall side who so often confound the pre-season predictions.
