Jonny Hayes’s Celtic exit took some fans by surprise.
The Irish winger had been an important utility player for Neil Lennon this past season, with the Hoops boss said to have been keen on keeping him in Glasgow.
But Celtic released the 32-year-old last week, along with Jozo Simunovic.
Brendan Rodgers spent £1.3 million on signing Hayes from Aberdeen in 2017, and could a return to Pittodrie be on the cards? Perhaps.
Dons chairman Dave Cormack told BBC Sportsound on Wednesday night: “Well personally I love Jonny. We just have to wait and see how we go through the next couple of months and certainly, I haven’t sat down with Derek at all to talk through where we might be with the squad but clearly Jonny that I’m a fan of. I love Jonny and the fans do too but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
It does sound like Cormack is open to the idea of bringing the former Celtic star back.
That being said, he might have much more attractive proposals on the table, following speculation earlier this year that the likes of Burnley, in the Premier League, were interested [Team Talk].
The Clarets may not be interested, but if Hayes winds up playing Premier League football next season then it should make Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell question the decision to let him go.
