Peterborough United chairman has said that Newcastle United should never have sold Ivan Toney to his side.

Speaking on the Totally Football Show, which was broadcast on Sky, MacAnthony claimed that the former Newcastle striker could well be set to earn himself a Premier League move in the summer.

And he feels that Newcastle made a mistake by ever letting Toney go.

“Newcastle should never have sold him to us, but we spent a lot of money buying him,” MacAnthony said.

“He’s been the best player in League One this season, hopefully he’ll get the golden boot.

“We obviously had multiple clubs try and buy him in January. We promised Ivan if we weren’t in the Championship next season we would sell him.

“We don’t sell our players cheaply. I can envisage he will go top two of three Championship clubs, or bottom 10 Premier League clubs.”

Posh signed Toney from Newcastle in 2018, and they are set to make a sizeable profit on him.

The Sun claim that Peterborough are looking to make £15 million on the forward, who has smashed in 26 goals at League One level this season.

Newcastle could certainly have done with a forward who has scored as regularly as Toney this season.

The Magpies have struggled for goals, with Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll all failing to hit the back of the net with any regularity.
