Gent chairman Ivan De Witte has told De Zondag that Leeds United have made an offer for Jonathan David.

De Witte has suggested that the offer from Leeds – who will play in the Premier League next season after clinching automatic promotion from the Championship this campaign – is better than the one from Lille.

According to The Express, Belgian club Gent want £23 million as transfer fee for the 20-year-old, who can operate as an attacking midfielder, shadow striker or centre-forward.

De Witte told De Zondag, as translated by The Express: “I have only expressed my annoyance that contacts have been made with Lille behind our back.

“There were no contacts last week, but that they have made a transfer impossible because of that is a bridge too far.

“The contacts were stopped this week, but other clubs are still interested. With much better proposals even. Including Leeds.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, David made 24 starts and three substitute appearances in the Jupiler League for Gent this past season, scoring 18 goals in the process.

The forward also scored three goals in seven appearances in the Europa League for the Belgian club this past campaign, according to WhoScored.

Good signing for Leeds United?

David is a very promising and talented young forward who has done well in Belgium, and he seems ready to take the next step in his career.

Leeds do need to sign a forward this summer to compete with Patrick Bamford, and the Canada international is at the age where he could be improved by head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
