Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will feel this season could prove to be their best chance of winning silverware.

Mauricio Pochettino, who never won a trophy during his time at Tottenham or in England, has the most ample of chances with Chelsea after they reached the League Cup final on Tuesday – the London club face Liverpool in the final.

Whilst Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, without European football, lock horns with holders Manchester City on Friday night in the FA Cup knowing that if they win that Fourth Round tie, then they will be one of the favourites to win the whole thing.

Legendary midfielder Cesc Fabregas lifted those trophies – League Cup and FA Cup – during his time in England and he highlighted how important it is to get your foot through the door, as he told Planet Football.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea star used Jose Mourinho as an example and how he would build the ‘mentality’ that winning the first trophy of the season – the League Cup in February – is a must, before following it up with the FA Cup and the Premier League.

Arsenal are out of the FA Cup picture this season, two teams from Manchester City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Chelsea will bow out this week.

You would imagine the winners of those ties will think they have a serious chance of winning the FA Cup outright and that was discussed by Cesc Fabregas.

Winning trophies

On winning the first trophy of the season: “Whilst you were saying that, straight away, the person that was coming to my mind was Mourinho,” said Fabregas.

“When I first signed for Chelsea. I do remember he went full-on for the Carling Cup. It was played in February. It was the first trophy that you can win in the season. He went full-on. Played the best XI in every single round, then we ended up winning it against Tottenham and then we ended up winning the Premier League. He was one of the coaches who believed in it the most.

On FA Cup chances if the likes of Spurs and Chelsea win their respective ties: “These are big games, especially for those clubs that are trying to build something. It’s the exact mentality Mourinho would bring to those clubs. Try to win it. Try to start from there and then go on to do your things.”

Tottenham and Chelsea without Europe

Both teams endured a difficult time last season. Sacking their managers midway through and the fans questioning where their respective clubs were going.

Chelsea can change that all under Pochettino by winning the League Cup and you will feel that would feed its way into other competitions.

Whilst Spurs, without any Europe, just like their London neighbours, and injured players returning, will feel this is their best chance of getting over that trophy line.
