Tim Sherwood has urged Burnley to sign Newcastle target, Ben Brereton Diaz, from Blackburn Rovers, as he told Sky Sports (22/01/22 at 1:10 pm).

After selling Chris Wood to Newcastle, former Blackburn Rovers captain, Sherwood, thinks that Burnley need someone with the ‘same characteristics’ as the Kiwi.

Whilst Brereton Diaz is ripping it up in the Championship, it would be pretty controversial if he swapped Ewood Park for their rivals at Turf Moor.

At this moment in time, Brereton Diaz is still a Blackburn player, but it could be a nervy last few days in the January transfer window for the promotion-chasing club.

It has emerged from the Sunday Mirror (23/01, p72) that both Newcastle and West Ham will make a final call this week on whether to sign the 20-goal striker.

Added with Wood, if Newcastle manage to add him to their ranks, then it would make them more dangerous in the final third, as Sherwood shared his thoughts on the player.

“Wood is going to be a big miss,” said Sherwood. “They are going to have to find someone, who is big and strong.

“They play very direct, with Westwood’s deliveries and McNeil’s deliveries. I think set-pieces are crucial for them to score goals.

“You are going to need a centre-forward with the same characteristics as Wood. Difficult to find.

“Normally, Dyche gets them out of the Championship. There is one down the road at Blackburn, but I am not sure they are going to be too kind. Ben Brereton Diaz is certainly one, who I will be looking to get.”

Many were left surprised when Wood left Burnley for Newcastle given that both clubs are in a similar situation.

But it seems as though a release clause was triggered and that paved a way for the player to leave.

It leaves Burnley in a problematic situation because they now need to replace their top-scorer from recent seasons.

Sean Dyche’s side are a team that already struggle in the final third as it is, so it will be interesting to see how they react to this Wood departure.
