Rob Hawthorne praised the West Ham supporters for the reception they gave Jesse Lingard during their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Sky commentator shared, from the gantry of the London Stadium, that the home supporters ‘certainly haven’t forgotten’ what Lingard did for them last season, as he told Sky Sports on Super Sunday.

Lingard was introduced into the action in the 73rd minute, with the West Ham fans providing the Manchester United star with a standing ovation.

But not long after, they would have had their head in their hands because he was scoring the winning goal.

Nonetheless, this is what Hawthorne has to say about West Ham fans actions as Lingard came onto the field on Sunday.

“There will be mixed feelings for the West Ham supporters at seeing the arrival of Jesse Lingard,” said Hawthorne.

“He re-ignited his football here with that loan spell last season. And that certainly hasn’t been forgotten.”

It has been a defining 2021 for Lingard and one that is showing no signs of stopping.

David Moyes and West Ham should get huge praise for the role they played because they were the ones who put faith in the England international.

Lingard was struggling for minutes at Old Trafford, and despite being out in the cold for so long, Moyes wanted him at the club and threw him straight into the action.

He made his debut against Aston Villa and that brace was the start of him putting his name back on the map and becoming an England international once more.
