Scotland winger Lewis Morgan is on loan at League One Sunderland from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
There were plenty of reasons to be cheerful for a number of Celtic players during the international break.
Dedryck Boyata earned praise from his manager as Belgium beat Russia in a Euro 2020 qualifier last week, Youssouf Mulumbu captained DR Congo to the African Cup of Nations, Kristoffer Ajer shone against Spain while Scott Bain kept a clean sheet in San Marino.
But it’s fair to say Lewis Morgan will return to club football with the bit between his teeth. Because the winger, who is on loan at Sunderland after failing to make his mark at Celtic, found himself stuck on the bench over the last week or so.
Handed his first competitive call up by Scotland manager Alex McLeish, Morgan will have been hoping to force his way into the former Rangers boss’ starting XI. But after being left on the sidelines in that humiliating 3-0 collapse in Kazakhstan, Morgan was nowhere to be seen as Scotland beat San Marino 2-0 to get their qualification campaign up and running.
This was the latest blow in what has been a disappointing season for a player who joined Celtic for £500,000 a year ago (The National).
Though with Sunderland in contention to seal promotion from League One and having reached the Checkatrade Trophy final, the campaign could still end in glory.
