Celtic’s Scott Bain admits surprise over Brendan Rodgers’s decision

Scott Bain has established himself as Celtic’s first choice goalkeeper in recent weeks.

Scott Bain has admitted to Celtic’s official website that he was a little surprised that he kept his place in the Hoops side following the Scottish Cup clash immediately after the mid-season break.

Bain has jostled with Craig Gordon for the number one spot since his arrival at Parkhead in January 2018. But the former Hibernian man had predominantly only featured in the cup competitions before the turn of the year.

However, Rodgers has named Bain in his starting lineup in all of their last 11 games following the cup win against Airdrie in January, which certainly suggests that the pecking order has changed. And the 27-year-old conceded that he did not expect to enjoy such a lengthy run in the side.

“I’m just enjoying the football that we play,” Bain told the club’s official website. “The way the manager encourages us to play and obviously the results have been great.

“I think it was a little bit of a surprise to stay in after the Airdrie game, but I’ve shown I’m capable of playing at this club, so long may it continue.”

The decision has certainly been vindicated as Bain has been superb during this run in the team. Celtic have won every domestic game that they have played in 2019, and the stopper’s recent record arguably made what happened at the weekend all the more difficult to stomach.

It is becoming incredibly tough to find anyone who is able to put a good case forward as to why Motherwell were entitled to go on and score their goal at Parkhead on Sunday. It clearly went against the spirit of the game, and it is almost astounding that Celtic were not subsequently allowed to walk the ball into the other net.

And unfortunately for Bain, it was the first domestic goal that he has conceded in 2019. In fact, you would have to go back to August for the last time Bain had to pick the ball out of his net in a domestic game, with the goalkeeper registering 13 clean sheets this term.
