The Hoops striker has opened up on his return to Celtic action last week after a hiatus from football.

Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths has taken to Instagram to thank supporters, family, friends, staff and teammates for helping him get back to playing football for the club.

Griffiths took a hiatus from the game back in December to deal with problems off the field and was out of action for the rest of the 2018/19 season.

With hard work in the gym and pre-season, he managed to feature in friendlies in Austria and Switzerland this summer before making his long-awaited competitive return last week against FK Sarajevo at Celtic Park, coming off the bench in a 2-1 win.

He’s delighted to be back.

That the 28-year-old is so hopeful for the future is great news for the player and his family. Griffiths has been given the time and patience required to he get himself healthy and ultimately, football issues aside, that is by far the most important thing.

On the pitch, now he’s back, evidence also suggests he can be a key weapon in Neil Lennon’s side and have a big season in support of Odsonne Edouard.

Griffiths has scored 104 goals in 204 appearances at the Hoops, also contributing 45 assists. It’s a fantastic record and is a rare contribution for a striker at Celtic.

John Hartson was the last player to score over 100 for the club and he left Celtic Park over 13 years ago.

No-one can expect too much, too soon from Griffiths after his return to action. Lennon will likely want to gradually reintroduce the player into his plans, for match sharpness reasons as much as anything.

In time though, the forward is likely to get back to his goalscoring best.

Some fans loved his Instagram message, responding supportively in the following fashion:

nataliellewellyn: Good to have you back

Griffiths will now be hoping to earn his first start over the next few weeks, with Celtic back in action against Nomme Kalju this Wednesday night.
