Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer is being questioned by local media in Norway.
It’s fair to say that Kristoffer Ajer has had a mixed season for Celtic so far this season.
The towering Norway international has been immense at times, following on from his heroics in helping the Hoops to a third successive treble last season.
But other times, the Celtic centre-back has been a tad suspect defensively.
Saturday night’s clash with Spain seemed to epitomise Ajer this season after the 21-year-old posted a supreme defensive display – for the most part.
Ajer posted a fine performance at the heart of Norway’s defence in holding the Spanish to a 1-1 draw last night, but the opening goal might’ve been his fault.
Saul Niguez volleyed home from outside the area on 47 minutes and television replays indicate that the Celtic star – valued at £15 million [The Leicester Mercury] – turned his back to the shot. Had he stayed still, Ajer might have successfully blocked Saul’s volley.
That was the opinion of Norwegian publication Dagbladet, who wrote: “Strong and uncompromising. Directed the others and has evolved to become a commander of the Norwegian defence.
“But why did he turn his back on Saul Niguez for the goal to make it 1-0?”
It’s worth saying again that Ajer is only 21. He is sometimes a victim of his own maturity on a football pitch, often looking far more experienced than he actually is, and mistakes like this are simply par for the course, providing that he learns from them.
