Maryan Shved is proving all those who doubted him wrong since joining Scottish Premiership champions Celtic for £2m?

Brendan Rodgers hardly hid the fact that Maryan Shved probably wasn’t a player he wanted at Celtic.

The Ukrainian joined the Scottish Premiership champions from Karpaty Lviv in January despite the fact that The Hoops are hardly short of options in wide areas. No wonder Rodgers seemed rather nonplussed.

“We’ve got about a million wingers and don’t need another one,” Rodgers told Sky Sports rather bluntly.

But maybe Rodgers, and many Celtic fans, were a little hasty giving the little-known Shved short shrift.

The 21-year-old returned to Lviv on loan until the end of the 2018/19 campaign once his £2 million move to Celtic was complete (Sun) and his form over the last two months or so suggests that the Glasgow giants could have a real star on their hands after all.

Shved took his tally to 13 goals for the season with a clinical brace in Tuesday’s win against Vorskla Poltava, meaning he is just three short in the race for the Golden Boot. And he has been rewarded for his fine form with the Ukrainian league’s Player of the Month award for March.

Few had heard of Virgil van Dijk, Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer before they joined Celtic and the signs suggest that Shved, Ukraine’s 2018 Player of the Year, could be another rising star.
