Celtic’s five-point plan for the January transfer window, featuring Benkovic and Fletcher

Celtic will almost certainly be in the market for January signings.

Celtic are still favourites to win the Scottish Premiership, but after a patchy opening to the season, it’s clear that Brendan Rodgers does still need to bring in some reinforcements in January.

With that in mind, here is a five-point plan for Celtic ahead of the January transfer window, in order to fend off any possible title challenge from Rangers…

1. Sign a right back

With Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa out of contract at the end of the season, it’s clear that Celtic need to sort out their right back situation. Anthony Ralston has shown promise in recent games, but if Lustig and Gamboa are to move on, a player should be signed in January to get truly up to speed for the Champions League qualifiers over the summer, rather than having to be rushed into the team.

2. Aid Edouard with an experienced striker

Paris Saint-Germain forward Timothy Weah appears to be on the verge of joining Celtic on loan, but the 18-year-old shouldn’t be considered as the only solution to the Bhoys’ lack of strikers. A more experienced forward – such as Sheffield Wednesday’s Steven Fletcher – should also be considered in order to ease the burden on youngsters Weah and Odsonne Edouard.

3. Plead with Leicester over Benkovic

Celtic currently have Croatian ace Filip Benkovic on loan from Leicester City, but the Foxes could still recall him in January. Benkovic has starred in the heart of the Celtic defence, and Celtic need to beg and plead with Leicester to let Benkovic stay at Parkhead in January, rather than leave Rodgers needing another defender next month.

4. Sort out Scott Brown’s future

Captain Brown is out of contract at the end of the season, and amid links to clubs in Australia and the United States, the midfielder’s future is up in the air. With no clear replacement currently at the club, it would be horrendous for Celtic to see Brown leave the club, and his future must be secured as soon as possible before he can sign a pre-contract agreement elsewhere.

5. Send Marvin Compper packing

Last January, Celtic looked to bring in some experience at the back by landing Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig, but the German has been arguably the biggest flop of Rodgers’ reign. Compper, 33, hasn’t featured at all this season, and clearly has no future under Rodgers, meaning he must move on at the next possible opportunity.
