Rangers loanee Umar Sadiq is off to a slow start at Ibrox, but he should look at how Odsonne Edouard blossomed late on at Celtic last season.
Glasgow Rangers loanee Umar Sadiq has had a slow start since signing from Roma and Kyle Lafferty’s signing pushes him down the pecking order to be third choice.
Sadiq has struggled for opportunities so far, stuck behind Alfredo Morelos, and Steven Gerrard has not started him.
An appearance for the under-20s last week was not a demotion, merely a chance for him to get some game time, but it showed where he is currently at.
But even as third choice, Sadiq should be positive, and need only look to Old Firm rivals Celtic to see a blueprint for his success.
Last season Celtic signed Odsonne Edouard on loan, and the path to success looked equally tough for him behind Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths, two proven strikers.
Edouard, just 19 a year ago, made only three Scottish Premiership appearances during the first three months of last season, scoring once.
Questions were being asked whether he would break through, before he got an opportunity in early December against Motherwell and repaid manager Brendan Rodgers with a hat-trick.
Edouard ended the season with 11 goals in all competitions, proving to be a worthy contemporary of his two teammates, and Celtic paid a club record £9 million to sign him in the summer.
Rangers loanee Sadiq should use this as inspiration, despite his slow initial start, and even if it continues late into the final month of 2018.
On any given weekend he could get his chance, and when he does, he must be ready to seize it.
If Sadiq can take advantage of his opportunity, scoring goals will open more doors at Ibrox.
