Celtic’s unbeaten run is finally over. And it’s bad news for Rangers.
Rangers should be encouraged by Celtic finally losing a domestic match under Brendan Rodgers – but the timing might not be so good.
Celtic’s loss to Hearts brought to an end their 69 game unbeaten run in domestic football, during which they have earned four trophies.
For Celtic, it is time to simply accept that the defeat had to happen eventually, and it is better that it happened in a match where they clearly had an off day, instead of coming down to a dodgy penalty call or offside decision.
The timing of their first defeat is significant, as it serves as a further wake up call to Brendan Rodgers.
Celtic’s weaknesses have been exposed in Europe, but their domestic form has papered over the cracks in their defence.
For this loss to happen ahead of the transfer window is ideal, as it will force Celtic into re-evaluating their squad.
They have to now re-focus, and that means improving their squad, and buying better players.
This had not been as urgent previously, but the defeat and the manner of it, gives them no option.
This in turn is bad news for Rangers. A new improved Celtic will be even harder to catch up to.
Celtic have a far bigger transfer budget than Rangers, and they now have the added impetus to now really kick on and use it.
