Celtic’s decision on Scott Brown’s future remains simple

Celtic have hardly missed Scott Brown, but they cannot allow the midfielder to leave the club.

It has been reported by The Scottish Sun that Scott Brown is attracting attention from clubs in America and Australia as his current Celtic deal runs into its final few months.

The Scottish Sun notes that the Hoops want to hand Brown a new two-year contract.

And while Brendan Rodgers’ men have hardly missed Brown on the pitch since he last played, it is surely fair to say that Celtic are absolutely making the right decision preparing to offer the skipper a fresh contract.

In his absence, the Bhoys have won four and drawn one of their six games without Brown in their side. Their only defeat came away to RB Leipzig which was always going to be a potentially-daunting trip even before the midfielder was taken off during the win against Hibs in the days prior.

Callum McGregor has been exceptional in the middle of the park, and Celtic’s attack have put teams to the sword in sensational fashion. In their last five games, they have scored 15 goals and conceded just one.

Their recent form highlights that Rodgers’ men are well-equipped for when Brown does move on. But that cannot be just yet.

Brown has been a fantastic leader for Celtic. No player in the division arguably will do a better job of dominating midfield battles in their late 30s than Brown inevitably will. He demands everything of himself, and his teammates then strive to contribute just as much.

There is no reason that he cannot remain a stalwart of the Celtic side for a number of years yet – even if he gradually loses his regular spot in the starting lineup.

Celtic have shown that they can cope if they lose Brown. But reports of interest in the Hoops hero should persuade the Bhoys board to act swiftly and make sure that his future is resolved.
