Craig Gordon should’ve perked up when he heard what Celtic team-mate Dorus De Vries said.
Dorus De Vries surprised Celtic fans for two reasons on the weekend.
First, the Dutch goalkeeper posted quite an impressive performance in the 1-0 win over Dundee for what was his first match since Barcelona fired seven past him 13 months ago.
Afterwards, De Vries told The Scottish Sun that manager Brendan Rodgers previously blocked his attempts to leave Parkhead.
That development is even more surprising than his performance and one man who can’t ignore the significance of it is Craig Gordon.
You could forgive the Scotland goalkeeper if he felt De Vries posed about as much danger to him as a sloth does a lion, but the 36-year-old’s revelation suggests that Rodgers does still rate him and Gordon isn’t as undroppable as he might’ve hoped.
The 34-year-old is prone to a goalkeeping error, but he could make them without really fearing for his number one shirt, though if De Vries’s comments are anything to go by then the Northern Irishman still envisages a future for the ex-Swansea stopper – whom he managed in South Wales – at Parkhead.
De Vries is suddenly back in the picture again and Gordon must ensure he stays on his toes.
