Celtic’s Champions League windfall good news in reported pursuit of Premier League duo

Any ambitious attempts to bring potential new signings to Celtic Park could be boosted by their European revenue.

Celtic could earn as much as £34 million from participating in the Champions League group phase this season according to The Daily Record, potentially freeing up funds for Brendan Rodgers to enhance his squad in January.

Although Brendan Rodgers’ side failed to win a single game in their first season back in the competition since 2013/14, not to mention suffering their heaviest ever European defeat against Barcelona, The Hoops more than held their own in the so-called ‘Group of Death’.

Celtic created the better of the opportunities at the Etihad in their 1-1 draw at the Etihad on Tuesday, a performance capped by a goal from on-loan Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts against his parent club, while also holding Pep Guardiola’s side to a trhilling 3-3 draw in Glasgow.

Furthermore, Borussia Monchengladbach were pinned back at home and Barcelona were reliant upon more Lionel Messi magic to seal a narrow 2-0 win at Celtic Park.

However, a total of just three points means they finished bottom of Group C though, on the upside, their exploits could see them rake in £27 million, potentially rising up to £34 million when taking into account merchandising, gate receipts and hospitality.

Therefore, Rodgers may well have a bit more money to play with in January as he attempts to build a squad capable of pushing on for the Champions League knockout phase in the coming years.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy, a diehard Celtic fan, and Scotland international Jordan Rhodes could be potential January targets, though their hefty price tags appeared to make any potential deal difficult to strike.

Boro, in particular, want to recoup much of the £9 million they paid for the prolific striker back in January, the Daily Mail reports.

However, with a cool £34 million extra in the back pocket, its not inconceivable that Celtic could soon add two players with the potential to be the league’s best in their position.
