Ferugson’s Rangers ties do not appear to have affected his view of the Celtic midfielder.
Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has named the Celtic player he believes can cement a place in Scotland’s team for the next ten years.
Ferguson was born into a Rangers’ supporting family which includes his older brother, Derek, another ex-Ibrox midfielder, but that does not appear to have affected his view of Celtic’s Callum McGregor.
McGregor was in and out of Celtic’s team at the start of Brendan Rodgers’ reign as manager, but has established himself as a regular over the past 12 months and is enjoying his most productive campaign to date for the Bhoys.
The 24-year-old Celtic academy product has already equalled his best ever seasonal goal tally, having scored seven times in 20 appearances in all competitions.
His performances have finally been recognised by the Scotland national team, for whom he is expected to make his international debut this week.
And Ferguson told STV’s Peter & Roughie’s Football Show it could be the start of a decade of service.
“He’s a player Callum McGregor,” he said. “I’ve liked him for the past year – I think he’s come on leaps and bounds.
“You see the game against Bayern Munich, I thought he was fantastic. And then on Saturday against St Johnstone he had another fine game. He, especially, for me, can cement a place in the middle of the park for the next ten years in Scotland.”
