Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers were beaten at the weekend, but Celtic managed to pick up a victory.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has told the Daily Record that Glasgow Rangers’ defeat on Sunday proves why the Bhoys won the league.

Celtic secured their eighth Scottish Premiership title in a row this term, despite an improved performance from Rangers.

Steven Gerrard’s side have closed the gap to Celtic, and there was great celebrations at Ibrox recently, when Rangers beat the Hoops 2-0.

However, Rangers failed to back up their victory in the Old-Firm derby.

Rangers were beaten 2-1 by Kilmarnock at the weekend, while Celtic ran out winners over Hearts.

And McGregor feels that the resilience of Celtic’s squad is the reason why they have finished above Rangers this ter.

“The team that wins the league is the one that deals with the setbacks and can go again the next week, so it shows you exactly the mentality within this group,” he said.

“Sunday was a perfect example. We lost the game last week at Ibrox yet we go and win the next game and Rangers lose.

“So yes, okay, you’re going to have some tough days but you come back and you are even stronger. To finish as we did on Sunday shows the real strength of character within the group.”

The Sun reported back in December that McGregor could leave Celtic to join Southampton in a £10 million transfer, but it seems that he will be at Parkhead next term now.

And McGregor will be hoping to help Celtic hold off the challenge of Rangers again next term, as they look to take one step closer to winning 10 league titles in a row.
