The Celtic midfielder is exactly the type of player they were crying out for against Rangers.

Celtic were below their majestic best for the weekend clash against Rangers, with the Bhoys’ usual goal-scorers struggling to make their mark.

While Stuart Armstrong impressed, plenty of those around him will chalk this down as a bad day at the office. But before Rangers fans get too excited they would be wise to remember Celtic were without a midfielder that can make all the difference when fit and available.

Tom Rogic is the goal-scoring midfielder Celtic were in desperate need of against Rangers; a player to step up when the usual creative catalysts in front of him are misfiring.

Prior to his injury, the Australia international scored 10 goals and provided five assists in 27 matches, and when he returns next season he will be an additional problem for Rangers to deal with when the two teams face off.

The 1-1 draw suggested Rangers are not as far behind Celtic as previously thought.

However given the Bhoys’ dominance in the league this season, and the fact that they will welcome back a goal-scoring midfielder intent on making up for lost time, Brendan Rodgers’ side still hold the upper hand.
