Kris Boyd says Celtic can’t say they weren’t warned that Rangers were capable of winning the league.

In both of Steven Gerrard’s first two seasons at the club, his side were impressive in the first half of the campaign before falling away dramatically after New Year.

A first win at Celtic Park in nine years saw Rangers end 2019 just two points behind their rivals with a game in hand.

Rangers were in an excellent position to go on and challenge for the title, but by the time football entered a shutdown in March they were 13 points behind their rivals.

This season, however, it would take a collapse of unprecedented proportions for the Ibrox side not to end the season as champions.

Speaking on Sky Sports prior to Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory for Rangers against Hibs at Easter Road, former Ibrox goalscorer Kris Boyd insisted Neil Lennon and his men should have been prepared for a sustained title push from Gerrard’s team.

He said: “I think that the first part of last season showed us all that Rangers were in a position where if they get it right for the full season they can challenge Celtic.

“That’s why when people are saying that Celtic never saw this coming, well they were warned in the first part of last season.

“Yes, I’ll go back to it. Spoke about it the other day as well that the Tynecastle loss in the cup was probably a turning point.

“The way that I thought Steven Gerrard spoke after the game, maybe his time was up.

“Covid hit, and when you’ve got the time to reflect as a manager, when you’re in the job, I think that was a big part of it.

“And then all of a sudden you’ve been able to reflect, realise what you need to do and Rangers have come back stronger for it.”

Alfredo Morelos’ winner on Wednesday night ensured Rangers remain 23 points clear in the Premiership with only 12 games left to play.
