Celtic are targeting Manchester City goalkeeper

Celtic are eyeing a move for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn, according to The Sun.

Gunn has impressed for the Championship side Norwich City on loan this season.

The goalkeeper would fill a position of need for the Scottish champions, but one key questions hangs over the potential switch…

Is it a move which has a future?

Celtic’s need for a new goalkeeper has been apparent this season, with 35-year-old Craig Gordon and Dorus De Vries, 37, failing to provide an answer.

Angus Gunn, 22, would be the antidote to this, but on a season long loan, he is no more of a long-term option.

Perhaps choosing not to commit long-term to a player unproven at the top level would be savvy from Celtic, but it is not really addressing their problem.

Signing Gunn on loan would be a sticking plaster solution to Celtic’s problem, simply kicking the issue down the road to be properly addressed next summer instead.

Celtic could hope that Gunn may be tempted to then join them permanently if his path at City is blocked, but this strategy is yet to pay dividends with Patrick Roberts and failed with Jason Denayer.

Gunn is very talented and City really have no reason to want to sell.

At a time when Celtic are hoping Brendan Rodgers will commit his long term future to the club, him choosing to sign a stop gap player to one of their biggest problems is not a good sign.
