Lee Gregory is out of contract in the summer but the Millwall striker does not appear to be on Celtic’s radar any longer.
Millwall’s decision to take a punt on Halifax Town forward Lee Gregory looks an inspired one on reflection. He scored 51 goals in 136 games for The Lions in his first three seasons at the club, helping Millwall earn promotion to the Championship and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season.
And the 29-year-old told News Shopper this week that he is hopeful of being handed a new contract with his current deal due to expire at the end of this season.
But the fact that Gregory looks most likely to extend his stay at The New Den is in stark contrast to the summer of 2016 when he was being eyed up by a number of clubs – including Scottish champions Celtic, according to The Mail.
The report claimed that Gregory had caught The Hoops’ eye after netting 27 goals for the then- League One club during the 2015/16 season. But, since those links emerged, the striker’s goal tally has dropped.
A still respectable tally of 15 last season as preceded a run of two in 16 so far in the current campaign. Millwall are yet to really settle in the second tier following their promotion and sit 18th with just four wins to their name so far.
But Gregory has struggled more than most. And even with Celtic eyeing a new striker in January, the Scotsman claiming that Astana’s Patrick Twumasi in on their radar with PSG loanee Odsonne Edouard unlikely to sign on a permanent basis, it appears that Gregory’s chances of getting his big break at the Champions League club has now passed him by.
