Celtic had a number of managers interested in their job before appointing Ange Postecoglou, and may be glad they didn’t go for Walter Mazzarri.
Mazzarri wanted Celtic job
Postecoglou didn’t seem to be Celtic’s first choice for the job, but few really care now – the Australian is loved at Parkhead.
One name who wanted the job before Postecoglou’s arrival was Italian boss Mazzarri.
The Sunday Post reported after Neil Lennon’s exit in February that Mazzarri was keen to take the Celtic job.
Mazzarri did have an interesting link to Celtic – he managed former Bhoys ace Shunsuke Nakamura at Reggina!
Still, few Celtic fans really wanted Mazzarri after mixed results at Watford and Torino.
Celtic didn’t go for Mazzarri in the end – and that looks to be a very wise decision.
Mazzarri struggling at Cagliari
In September, Mazzarri did return to management as he landed the Cagliari job.
On Saturday night, Mazzarri’s Cagliari were hammered 4-0 at home by Udinese.
That’s now just one win in 14 league games for Mazzarri at Cagliari, with his job understandably now under threat.
That kind of record absolutely wouldn’t be tolerated at Celtic, and you simply have to feel that Postecoglou was clearly the better choice.
