Ola Solbakken has agreed to join Jose Mourinho at Serie A giants AS Roma after Celtic turned down the chance to sign the Bodo/Glimt forward, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.
As the fireworks fizzle out on New Years’ night, Solbakken will have an extra reason to celebrate.
The Norway international will become a free-agent when his Bodo/Glimt contract expires on December 31st. And with all due respect to a club who have dominated the Eliteserien during Solbakken’s time in the Arctic Circle, a move to the Italian capital represents a major leap forward in the 24-year-old’s career prospects, even if Roma’s 6-1 humbling at the hands of Bodo/Glimt remains fresh in the memory.

Solbakken scored twice on that famous night at the Aspmyra Stadion; adding another couple of grey hairs to Jose Mourinho’s once-slate black locks. Then again, if you can’t beat them, sign them.
Ola Solbakken is reportedly joining Roma from Bodo/Glimt
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the skilful forward will be playing for Roma rather than against them in 2023. He has already reached an agreement with the Giallorossi. Solbakken could even move to Italy as soon as November, when the Norwegian league comes to an end.
“It’s nice and fun to know they (Roma) are interested,” the former Rosenberg youngster told Dagbladet in May. “Jose Mourinho is a great coach, there’s no denying that.
According to the Scottish Express, Solbakken was offered to Celtic during the summer of 2021. Ange Postecoglou was embarking upon a dramatic rebuilding project at Parkhead at the time. The Hoops opted for Liel Abada instead, however. And with 21 goals and 12 assists in 14 months, you won’t find many at Parkhead regretting that decision.
This, then, feels like one of those once-in-a-blue-moon situations where things work out well for everyone. Abada shines at Celtic, and Solbakken ends up at Roma after inspiring Bodo/Glimt to the most iconic victory in their 106-year history.
