Football Scotland claim Celtic defender Stephen Welsh could leave on loan to join Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day, in a move that would see the Parkhead centre-back link up with both Josh Windass, and Celtic fan Barry Bannan.
Welsh, 23, has only managed six appearances for Celtic this season. Injuries have hampered the Scotland U21 star. Now fit, he finds himself some way down the pecking order. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt are first choice.
Yuki Kobayashi has joined the club. It has seen Moritz Jenz cancel his loan from Lorient and since move to German side Schalke. Now, Welsh could follow Jenz in leaving. Celtic are seemingly willing to let Welsh leave the club on loan.
Wednesday, who are pushing for promotion in England’s third tier, have opened talks to sign Welsh. They have made an enquiry and found that Celtic are open to his exit. He would link up with Windass and Bannan at Hillsbrough.

Welsh needs a loan. While Celtic may prefer to keep him at the club as cover, Welsh needs to be selfish in this situation and get himself a move. At 23, and given his talent, he has only played 52 senior times for the Scottish champions.
A player Greg Taylor has been described as “superb”, Welsh would be joining another big club in the form of Darren Moore’s Wednesday. A club that knocked Newcastle out of the FA Cup – and sit in second place, in line for promotion.
Welsh needs to leave Celtic and Wednesday would be a good move. A chance to play week in, week out. He has a deal until May 2025 at Celtic, so there is a future there. A loan would give him the chance to show Celtic what he can do.
