Chris Sutton has responded on Twitter after Fabrizio Romano reported that Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds have agreed a £3.5million fee to sign Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis – but MLS side Atlanta United are still interested.

Giakoumakis, 28, joined Celtic in the summer of 2021 from VVV-Venlo. The Greece international had topped the Dutch goalscoring rankings in 2020-21, despite his club being relegated. In his first season, he impressed – scoring 17 in 29.

This season, he has fallen down the pecking order. Kyogo Furuhashi is preferred up top by Ange Postecoglou at Celtic. Talks over a new deal for Giakoumakis have stalled. The striker now looks set to leave – despite scoring on Saturday.

The second in a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hampden Park. But now, it appears he has played his last game for Celtic. Romano reported that the Hoops have agreed a fee with Urawa.

Celtic legend Sutton reacted to the news on Twitter. He cannot believe that Giakoumakis is about to leave the club for a fee of £3.5million – suggesting that it could be a blow to Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

Giakoumakis has been crucial at times off the bench for Celtic. He offers Celtic something different up top to Kyogo and when the Japan star is not firing, Giakoumakis comes on and scores goals. The Greek star loves a battle in attack.

So, selling him at that crucial stage in the season, with a League Cup final on offer, is intriguing. Clearly, Celtic must have a replacement lined up for the big no.7, or they would not be selling him. An exciting few days ahead for Celtic.
