Celtic transfer news: Brendan Rodgers comments on Boyata, Hartson’s advice

Dedryck Boyata is out of contract at Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic at the end of the season.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told The Scottish Sun that he wants Dedryck Boyata to stay at the club until the end of the season.

Boyata is out of contract at Celtic at the end of the 2018-19 campaign, and the former Manchester City defender has not signed a new deal with the Glasgow giants.

Celtic will lose the Belgium international for nothing in the summer of 2019, while the Glasgow giants could get a sizeable transfer fee for the 28-year-old if they decide to cash in on him now.

Manager Rodgers has said that he wants Boyata to carry on playing for Celtic until the end of the season.

Rodgers told The Scottish Sun when asked if there was any update to Boyata’s situation: “No, nothing. He will just stay calm and see out the season and see where he’s at.

There will be interest in him of course but nothing concrete at the moment. Does it suit us if he stays? Yeah, it’s something we would want. He’s a very, very good player.”

Celtic stay

With Celtic facing a stiff challenge from Old Firm rivals Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title this season, they need to keep hold of Boyata for the rest of the season.

Even if the Hoops get a good transfer fee, they are unlikely to find a suitable replacement this month.

John Hartson advice

Meanwhile, former Celtic striker John Hartson has suggested that the Hoops need to sign a central defender and a right-back in the January transfer window.

Hartson wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times while praising the signings Celtic have already made this month: “But I still think there is time to get in another centre-half and a right-back.”
