Ross Doohan has told The Scottish Sun that he has kept in contact with the goalkeeper coaches at Celtic, as he looks to impress during a season-long loan with Tranmere Rovers.

The shot-stopper joined the League Two outfit at the start of August, reuniting with Micky Mellon after working with him at Dundee United. Doohan made two outings during his emergency Tannadice Park spell, and made his Rovers debut a week after joining.

Mellon is yet to unleash Doohan in a fourth-tier fixture after four possible games, with the 23-year-old an unused substitute. But the Parkhead product hopes what he achieves at Prenton Park this season helps to cement a role back in Glasgow upon his return next year.

Doohan does not feel he is out of Celtic’s sight, so out of their mind on loan at Tranmere, either. Instead, he has kept in contact with Ange Postecoglou’s backroom team as they monitor his progress. All with the intention of becoming the Hoops’ future first-choice.

“I still keep in touch with the goalkeeping coaches; Stevie Woods and Colin Meldrum,” Doohan said. “I know they will be keeping an eye on what I am doing, and they speak to me during the week.

“They like to know what I am doing at training, and they have been watching the games. It’s not like it is an out of sight, out of mind situation – they want to know how I’m doing.

“Ultimately, I want to be the Celtic number one, one day, that has to be my ambition. I want to play for the club, but right now that won’t happen. So, it was about getting myself out there and getting more experience. Hopefully, I can get that here.”

Celtic will want Doohan playing more regularly during Tranmere loan

Celtic will want Doohan to play more regularly during his season-long loan with Tranmere than he so far has. But his EFL Cup performance against Oldham Athletic – his only Rovers outing to date – showed plenty of promising signs.

Carl Piergianni’s thumping header forced a tremendous save from Doohan. Tom Davies also left him helpless when he headed Nicky Adams’ cross into Rovers’ net to gift Oldham an equaliser.

Tranmere would go on to lose the tie on penalties, but Woods and Meldrum will have noted Doohan’s fine save.
