Simon Ferry has told Open Goal that he believes Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate could play for any club in the Premier League after starring for Ange Postecoglou’s side since joining the club in January 2022 – for a bargain fee of £1.4m.
Hatate, 25, joined Celtic just over a year ago from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale and immediately was a hit at Celtic Park. He has since clocked up 58 games for the Scottish champions, making himself first choice. 12 goals, 12 assists.
A player that earned praise from Alistair Johnston earlier this season, who claimed he “goes under the radar” for his technique. Celtic have certainly got themselves a player – and he is tied down at Parkhead until the summer of 2026.
Speaking in his latest Open Goal podcast alongside Kenny Miller, Paul Slane and Kevin Kyle – Broomhill manager Ferry said he thinks Hatate is good enough to play for any club in England. Whether they are at the bottom, or at the top.
“The one for me that could play in any team in England, is Hatate. Whether it is a team that is battling for survival, or a team right at the top – I think he can go play there. He is still young,” Ferry said, when discussing Celtic on Open Goal.

There is no doubt that Hatate has technique, attitude, work rate and numbers to play in the Premier League. But what level in England’s top tier is Hatate currently at? He would obviously prefer not to join a side in a relegation battle.
Ryan Christie left Celtic for Bournemouth and at the time, it was a bit of a surprise given the Cherries were not in the Premier League. But it has worked out for him, with Bournemouth gaining promotion. Hatate should expect more.
A mid-table side that plays attractive football is good enough to have a player like Hatate in their side. Perhaps, a move to Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City or a club of that ilk would suit the Japan international. Intriguing summer ahead.
