Richmond Boakye is one of the most in form strikers in Europe, but he struggled to match the hype last night in the Europa League.

The Mail reported this week that Scottish champions Celtic are tracking his progress, after his excellent recent record for Red Star Belgrade – which has seen him net 11 goals in 18 games.

Boakye could likely transition into Scottish football with ease, but if Celtic really want to go to the next level, they need a game changer able to help them challenge top European teams.

This season they have drawn blanks this season against big guns Bayern Munich and PSG.

Boakye’s performance last night for Red Star Belgrade against Arsenal was not encouraging.

He played 90 minutes against the Gunners, and could not break their resilience, as Arsenal recorded a 1-0 win.

But this was far from Arsenal’s full strength team, in fact it was a line up which had fans fearing the worst at kick-off, particularly their back three.

It featured midfielder Mohamed Elneny, youngster Rob Holding, and injury prone veteran Mathieu Debuchy, who was playing his first match of the season.

Boakye did not test the goalkeeper, and if he cannot get it done against a makeshift Arsenal defence like that, Celtic would be right to hesitate.

It would cost Celtic a record fee to sign the Ghanaian, and he will have to step his game up in his next Europa League group game against Arsenal if he is to convince Brendan Rodgers’ side he would be an upgrade on their current options.
